How can we help? 👋

Providing Resident Passcodes

Generate backup Resident passcodes for their unit smart lock.

What about residents who don't have a smartphone, or maybe they just left it on the kitchen counter? Fear not, Aptly has a solution for that too!

How Residents Generate Their Own Passcodes

By default, residents can generate their own unique nine-digit passcode from within their Aptly Resident App. This code is a backup for those "oops, I forgot my phone" moments.

Creating Passcodes in the NoKey App

Residents can use the NoKey app to access their property using Bluetooth. The app does not require cellular service or Wi-Fi to unlock the door — Bluetooth simply needs to be enabled on the resident’s phone, and the phone must be near the lock.

When residents log into the app, they will only see the property they are assigned to.

Creating a New Passcode

To create a passcode in the NoKey app:

  1. Open the NoKey app.
  1. Select your property.
  1. Tap on the lock you would like to manage.
  1. Select Passcodes+ at the top of the screen.
  1. Enter a name for the passcode.
  1. Choose the type of passcode you would like to create.

Passcode Types

One-Time Code

A One-Time Code is ideal for temporary access, such as allowing a house cleaner or visitor into the property while you are away.

  • The code is only valid for the selected day and time.
  • Once activated, the code remains available for up to 6 hours.

Time Period Code

A Time Period Code is useful for recurring or short-term access needs, such as:

  • Guests staying at the property
  • Dog walkers
  • Pet sitters
  • Temporary visitors

Residents can select a specific start and end date/time for the code.

Custom Code

A Custom Code is best for individuals who may need ongoing access to the property, such as:

  • Family members
  • Children or minors in the household
  • Trusted recurring visitors

Custom passcodes:

  • Must be between 4–9 digits long
  • Can include a custom start and end time if desired
  • Are added directly to the lock

Important Notes

  • Bluetooth must be enabled on the resident’s phone.
  • The resident’s phone must be near the lock in order to create or sync passcodes to the device.
  • Residents only have access to locks associated with their assigned property.

How Your Team Can Help with a Passcode

Sometimes, a resident might call you in a panic because they're locked out.

  1. From the Aptly Access widget for that lease, you can see all the passcodes the resident has generated.
  1. In an emergency, you can generate a temporary code for them directly from Aptly Access.
  1. Provide this code to the resident over the phone.
💡

Pro-tip: Before you give out the code, be sure to verify their identity. A good practice is to confirm their name and unit number.

Long-Term Passcodes

If you have a resident who doesn't use a smartphone, you can generate a long-term passcode for them. This code can be set for the duration of their lease, giving them a reliable way to get into their unit without needing the app.
